Known for his infectious energy and charisma, Lance Theron is perfect for a variety of event-types from corporate year-end functions to club parties.
Who is Lance Theron?
I’m a DJ, producer and entertainer from Cape Town, who has been in the entertainment industry for 16yrs, entertaining audiences locally and abroad and recently released two singles on national radio.
Congratulations with your current single ‘Higher’ featuring Candice Thornton and it being playlisted and performing well on certain chart shows. Can you let us in on how the track came about and the creative process?
I’ve recently been signed by Stereotype Talent Management run by Chad and Lee Saaiman. My concept for ‘Higher’ was inspired by the kind of music I love playing and I wanted to create an uplifting piece of music with a positive lyric. I had the pleasure of working with the talented Mr.Mallum, Candice Thornton and Chad Saaiman. ‘Higher’ is doing very well on national radio charts:
No:15 on GHFM hot 30
No:2 on GHFM SA Top 5
No:4 on Heart FM SA Top 10
Your debut single, ‘Back to you,’ with Chad Saaiman also did well. What was your input in the track and what was the concept for the music video?
‘Back To You’ was my debut release and opened my audience’s eyes to me as a producer and not just as a DJ. Working with Chad Saaiman and Durban based producer Mario Ogle, this was a fun and exciting production as I had to fly up to Durban to record my 1st single. It’s love being involved in every stage of production instead of working miles apart via email and voice notes! It makes more sense to feel the emotion of the song in the studio and become one with the team (The creativity among us was electric). With regards to the music video – I wanted a clean and fresh looking video that would tell the story of the song, it was art in the making. I loved the scene switching between live models to mannequins as it explained the video.
With your music being in high rotation what’s your thoughts on the current SABC 90% music quota?
Local artists and DJs must have been smiling when the 90% SA music quota was announced. This will increase listenership and will give up-and-coming artists such as myself a bigger platform to release their work. By saying this it will push us to release international sounding production and improve our standard to compete with local and international DJs, artists and producers.
In terms of more releases are you planning to do them independently or release and distribute them through a label?
I think it’s every artist’s dream to be signed by a record label (that’s what we strive towards right?) I’m happy that I get to share my music and be play listed nationally. To answer your question, if the opportunity had to present itself it would be amazing. I have a dedicated and strong-minded team backing me and taking me in the right direction. I feel they have my best interests and the growth of my career at heart. They would love to see me grow with them and would be very supportive if a label approached, but for now I’m focused on releasing more tracks to keep you all entertained!
You come from a background managing clubs and also being a promoter – how and when did this all happen?
I could give you the long story but it’s not the time (hahahah) I was in retail for many years and I needed a change and an opportunity to grow as an individual. I was performing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Fan Zone where I met a Swedish couple who wanted me to head up their music and events at their well-known establishment The Dubliner/Kennedys.
What’s your vision for your new venue, UNIK?
UNiK is our new venture based in Claremont, which caters for everyone . We are striving to bring a lifestyle experience to Claremont with live performers showcasing fresh talent by infusing music, art and unity across the board.
Let us in on some of the challenges you face being an artist, manager, DJ & promoter?
The nightlife is a very stressful and fickle industry, you continuously have to be 5 steps ahead of your competitors.Being a DJ people tend to label you as that and not acknowledge that you are experimenting and enhancing your producing abilities. Going back to your question regarding management and promoting, you have to remember that you are the brand and how you are perceived so will reflect onto your venue and vice versa. Your emotions have to be put into your back pocket and you have to be professional at all times no matter the circumstances.
What’s your thoughts on the current nightlife culture in Cape Town and how does it compare to Europe as you have been playing gigs over there?
The difference in the nightlife between Cape Town / SA and Europe is that clubbing is huge thing and done on a massive scale and they are not afraid to bring new concepts to entertain the masses. Us locals are fickle and loyal to one event or venue and are afraid to explore new ways to be entertained. I believe that clubbing should be an experience and should differ from week to week to keep it fresh. We need that X-factor when we are delivering events in our clubs. I’ve seen some insane venues and crazy parties in Scandinavia.
In terms of future release who would you love to work with?
The possibilities are endless when it comes to the talent we have . Portia Monique, Jimmy Nevis, Ziyon are just a few I would love to work with.
